What is doxxing, and how do you protect yourself?

Doxxing is when someone digs up and publishes another person’s private information — home address, phone number, workplace — usually to harass or intimidate them. It’s frightening precisely because most of the pieces are already out there, waiting to be connected. Understanding how it works is the first step to making yourself a harder target.

How doxxers find information

A doxxer rarely “hacks” anything. They assemble public breadcrumbs: details you’ve posted on social media, your name on public records and data-broker sites, information leaked in old breaches, and sometimes your IP address, which can reveal your rough location. Piece by piece, a picture forms. Gamers and anyone with a public profile are common targets, but it can happen to anyone who upsets the wrong person.

How to reduce your exposure

You can’t erase everything, but you can make yourself much harder to dox:

1. Lock down social media and remove your address, phone number and workplace from public view.
2. Opt out of people-search and data-broker sites that list your details.
3. Use unique passwords and 2FA so old breaches don’t hand over your accounts.
4. Hide your IP with a VPN, especially while gaming or streaming, so it can’t be used to pin down your location or hit you with attacks.
5. Be careful what background details appear in photos you post — street signs, house numbers, landmarks.

If it happens to you

If you’re doxxed, document everything with screenshots, report it to the platforms involved and — if there are threats — to the police. Contact the sites hosting your information to request removal. And tighten your accounts immediately. It’s a distressing experience, but acting quickly and methodically limits the harm.
