What is DNS, and why it matters more than you think

DNS is one of those pieces of internet plumbing you never think about until it breaks — or until you realise how much it knows about you. It runs billions of times a day, invisibly, and it has more to do with your privacy and speed than almost anything else. Here’s what it actually is, without the jargon.

The internet’s address book

Computers don’t find each other by name — they use numeric IP addresses. But nobody wants to memorise a string of numbers for every website, so we use names like jaguarvpn.com. DNS, the Domain Name System, is the service that translates the name you type into the number your device needs. It’s the internet’s address book, and a lookup happens every single time you visit a site, load an image, or open an app.

Why it’s a privacy issue

Here’s the catch: whoever answers those lookups sees a complete, timestamped list of every domain you visit. By default, that’s your internet provider. So even with encrypted websites hiding the contents of your pages, your DNS history alone paints a detailed picture of your life — the sites you read, the services you use, when you’re awake.

It gets worse if those lookups leak somewhere you didn’t intend. That’s the whole problem behind a DNS leak, where your queries escape to your ISP even while you’re using a VPN.

DNS and speed

DNS affects how fast the web feels, too. Every fresh page you visit starts with a lookup, and a slow or distant DNS server adds a small delay to each one. It’s rarely dramatic, but a fast, nearby resolver makes browsing feel a touch snappier — one reason people sometimes switch away from their ISP’s default DNS.
