How a fingerprint is built

Every time you visit a site, your browser quietly reveals dozens of small details: your operating system, browser version, screen size, time zone, language, installed fonts, and how your device renders graphics. Individually these are unremarkable. Combined, they form a pattern that’s often unique to your device — a “fingerprint” a site can recognise on your next visit, without any cookie.

Why it’s hard to beat

The frustrating irony is that trying too hard can make you more identifiable. If you install a pile of unusual privacy extensions and tweak dozens of settings, you become a rarer, more distinctive fingerprint — easier to single out, not harder. Realistic steps that reduce your fingerprintability:

• Use a mainstream browser with built-in fingerprint protection, kept up to date, rather than a heavily-customised one.
