What is a VPN kill switch, and do you actually need one?

VPN connections drop. It’s not a flaw so much as a fact of networking — you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data, a server hiccups, your laptop wakes from sleep. The question isn’t whether the tunnel will ever go down. It’s what happens in the seconds before it comes back up.
Without a kill switch, the answer is: your device does what it always does when a connection fails — it falls back to the normal, unprotected one. For a moment, your real IP address and your traffic are exposed, and you have no way of knowing it happened.
What a kill switch actually does
A kill switch watches the VPN tunnel and, the instant it detects the tunnel is down, blocks all internet traffic from leaving your device until the tunnel is back. Nothing gets out in the clear. The name is dramatic, but the behaviour is simple: no tunnel, no traffic.
The trade-off is that you briefly lose connectivity during a reconnect instead of silently browsing unprotected. For anyone using a VPN for privacy rather than just convenience, that’s exactly the trade-off you want.
Who really needs it
If you use a VPN so a specific site loads faster, a leak of a few seconds probably doesn’t bother you. But if you’re using one because the stakes of exposure are real — you’re a journalist, you live somewhere browsing is monitored, you’re handling anything sensitive, or you simply don’t want your ISP building a profile of you — a kill switch isn’t optional. It’s the piece that makes the “no logs, hidden IP” promise actually hold under real-world conditions.
There’s a related setting worth turning on at the same time: blocking traffic when no VPN is connected at all, not just when one drops. Together they mean your device never talks to the internet outside the tunnel, full stop.
How to check yours is working
It’s easy to test. Connect the VPN, start a continuous download or a live stream, then disconnect your Wi-Fi for a few seconds and reconnect. With a working kill switch, the transfer stalls the moment the tunnel drops and resumes only once it’s re-established — it never quietly continues over the exposed connection.
