Every so often a warning does the rounds: don’t use public USB charging ports, they can steal your data. It sounds like scaremongering, and the risk is often overstated — but the underlying issue is real, and the fix is so easy there’s no reason not to take it. Let’s be precise about what’s actually going on.
What “juice jacking” means
A standard USB cable carries both power and data on the same connector. When you plug your phone into a public port — an airport wall, a mall kiosk, a hotel lamp — you’re trusting that there’s nothing on the other end but electricity. The theoretical attack, “juice jacking”, is a tampered port or cable that uses the data lines to pull files off your phone or push malware onto it while it charges.
How worried should you actually be?
Honestly? It’s a low-probability threat for most people. Modern phones ask permission before allowing data access over USB — you’ve seen the “Trust this computer?” prompt — which blocks the naive version of the attack. Documented real-world cases are rare. This is a “possible, not probable” risk, and it doesn’t deserve panic.
That said, “rare” isn’t “never”, and the cost of being safe is close to zero — so why carry the risk at all?
The five-second fixes
The simplest habit: don’t use public USB ports. Plug your own charger into a wall socket instead — power from the mains carries no data lines to worry about. If you only have a USB port available, use a “charge-only” cable or a small USB data blocker, which physically omits the data pins so only power gets through. And carry a power bank; a charged one means you’re never desperate enough to plug into a sketchy port in the first place.
