How to watch your home streaming services abroad

You land in another country, open your usual streaming app, and the show you were halfway through is gone — replaced by a different catalogue, or a message that the service isn’t available here. It’s one of the most common travel annoyances, and it’s entirely fixable once you understand why it happens.

Why your shows disappear

Streaming services license content country by country, so the same subscription shows a different catalogue depending on where you appear to be. They work out your location from your IP address. Travel abroad and your IP says “I’m in this country now”, so you get that country’s library — or nothing, if the service doesn’t operate there. Getting your home library back

A VPN makes your connection appear to come from your home country again, so your services behave as if you never left:

1. Connect to a VPN server in your home country before opening the streaming app.
2. Sign in as usual — you’ll see your normal, home catalogue.
3. If playback flags a proxy, switch to another server in the same country and try again.
4. Pick a nearby city within your home country to keep speeds high enough for HD.

A note on doing it right

You’re accessing services you already pay for, from your own account — a VPN just restores your normal access while you travel. Keep the app on the device you actually watch on (phone, laptop, or a Fire Stick), and connect before you press play. One subscription covers every screen you take on the trip.
