How to stop buffering when streaming

Buffering is maddening precisely because it’s intermittent — everything’s fine, then the wheel spins at the worst moment. The instinct is to blame a slow connection, but streaming HD video needs surprisingly little bandwidth, so the real cause is usually something else. Here’s how to hunt it down.

The usual culprits

Work through these, roughly in order of likelihood:

  1. Wi-Fi, not internet. A weak signal to your TV or stick causes far more buffering than most people realise. Move closer to the router, or wire the device in.
  2. Peak-hour congestion. Evenings are when everyone streams at once and networks fill up — see why your internet is slower at night.
  3. ISP throttling of video. Some providers deliberately cap streaming quality; a VPN stops them singling it out.
  4. Too many devices at once. A big download or another 4K stream in the house eats the bandwidth video needs.
  5. The service or server having a bad moment — occasionally it really is them.

Where a VPN helps (and where it doesn’t)

If your ISP is throttling video, a VPN genuinely fixes buffering by hiding the traffic so it can’t be slowed — run our Speed Test with and without it to check. If the problem is weak Wi-Fi or an overloaded household, a VPN won’t help; fix the local network first. And if you’re using a VPN for streaming, a distant server can add buffering, so choose one close to you.

The quick checklist

Wire in the device or move it closer to the router, pause other big downloads, restart the router if it’s been up for weeks, and test whether a VPN lifts your speed during the hours it buffers. Most buffering traces back to one of those four.
