How to choose the right VPN server location

Open a VPN app and you’re faced with a long list of countries. Which one you pick changes your speed, what content you can reach, and in some cases how private you are. The right answer depends on what you’re doing — here’s the short version for each case.

For speed: closest is (usually) best

Latency grows with distance. If you just want protection while you browse, pick the server nearest to you — same country, or a neighbouring one. Most apps, including ours, have a “fastest” option that does this automatically, factoring in live server load as well as distance.

The exception is congestion: if your nearest location is busy or your ISP throttles routes to it, a slightly farther server can be quicker. Measure instead of guessing — run our Speed Test connected to each candidate and compare.

For streaming: match the catalogue

Streaming libraries are licensed per country, so connect to a server where the show you want is available — a US server for the US catalogue, a UK server for BBC iPlayer, and so on. Pick the city closest to your real location within that country to keep the distance penalty small.

For gaming: chase the game server, not your house

Your ping is decided by the path to the game’s server, not to your sofa. Connect to a VPN location in the same region as the game server you play on. Sometimes a VPN even lowers ping by routing around a congested ISP path — again, measure it rather than assuming.

For privacy: jurisdiction matters more than distance

Any of our servers encrypts your traffic and hides your IP equally well. If your concern is legal exposure — journalists, activists, or anyone in a country with aggressive surveillance — prefer servers in privacy-friendly jurisdictions, and consider multi-hop, which chains two locations so no single server ever sees both who you are and where you’re going.
